Moving Insurance Guide

Protect your belongings during your move

Types of Moving Insurance

Released Value Protection (Basic)

This is the minimum coverage required by law. It's free but only covers $0.60 per pound per article. For example, a 50-pound TV would only be covered for $30.

Cost: Free | Coverage: Minimal

Full Value Protection

Covers the full replacement value of damaged or lost items. The mover is responsible for repairing, replacing, or reimbursing you for the full value.

Cost: 1-2% of declared value | Coverage: Comprehensive

Third-Party Insurance

Purchased separately from an insurance company. Often more comprehensive and may cover things movers' insurance doesn't, like damage during packing.

Cost: Varies | Coverage: Customizable

What's Typically Covered

Usually Covered

  • • Damage during transport
  • • Loss of items
  • • Theft during move
  • • Accidents during loading/unloading

Usually NOT Covered

  • • Pre-existing damage
  • • Items you packed yourself (unless noted)
  • • Valuables (jewelry, cash, documents)
  • • Damage from natural disasters

How to File a Claim

1

Document Immediately

Take photos of any damage as soon as you notice it. Don't wait - most policies have time limits for filing claims.

2

Review Your Contract

Check your moving contract for specific claim procedures and deadlines. Most require claims within 9 months of delivery.

3

Gather Documentation

Collect photos, receipts, appraisals, and any other proof of value. Create an inventory of damaged items.

4

File the Claim

Submit your claim in writing to the moving company. Include all documentation and be specific about damages.

5

Follow Up

Keep records of all communications. If the mover doesn't respond, you can file a complaint with the FMCSA.

Tips for Choosing Coverage

  • Always get Full Value Protection for valuable items - basic coverage is insufficient
  • Create a detailed inventory before moving - photos and receipts help with claims
  • Read the fine print - understand exclusions and limitations
  • Consider third-party insurance for high-value moves or specialty items
  • Ask about deductibles - some policies have them, others don't
  • Verify the mover's insurance is active and sufficient
  • Keep valuables with you - insurance may not cover cash, jewelry, or documents
